Multimedia

M
On location for The Survival Doctor’s Emergencies Training Course, which I produced and co-hosted.

While this website mostly shows off my long-form written work, I’ve also been involved with multimedia for more than 20 years.

You do what you’ve gotta do. Makeshift voice-over setup for a quick project in 2011. (It sounded pretty good, all things considered.)

In my first journalism job—production assistant at CNN—I researched archival videos (Beta, reel-to-reel, all that fun stuff) for the daily show Inside Politics and occasionally edited footage. I fell in love with fast-paced multimedia journalism and have since produced a variety of visual and audio projects for clients.

I’m skilled at directing, editing and hosting. And I understand the nuances of writing for the spoken word versus the written.

Here are some highlights:

  • Served as producer and co-host for an in-depth training series for The Survival Doctor. (See sample videos here.) My job included preproduction/production planning and coordinating. I also edited voice-over text and directed vocal delivery.
  • Produced, directed and edited dozens of video blogs for clients. (Often also wrote and hosted.)
  • Wrote radio scripts for Your Health Choice (which was a health-minute type of show).
  • Currently help lead Thacker Mountain Radio Hour‘s evolving multimedia-outreach strategy. (See videos below.)

I’ve also done voice-over and film work (producing, writing, directing, editing and on-camera stints).

Guest-Booking Experience

I’m experienced with guest bookings on both the guest’s side and the producer’s.

For My Family Doctor magazine and The Survival Doctor, I booked the publisher on dozens of interviews and coordinated scheduling—often during breaking news events, such as during the Ebola outbreak. And for Thacker Mountain Radio Hour, I’m the guest-marketing coordinator, ensuring we have materials to promote every interview effectively.

I also love digging to find the right person for the right interview—using professional contacts, personal research and grassroots efforts to find a compelling interviewee.

Video Samples

Every October, Murray and Nancy “have adventures.” Even though they don’t live in the same city, they get together annually for a trip. And Thacker got to be part of this one!

“That notion of community that it fosters remains, even as it’s gotten bigger.” Tom and David share their experiences with a small-town radio show that’s grown and grown. (This episode was filmed after one of Thacker‘s shows at the Lyric Oxford, a larger venue than its regular space, Off Square Books.)
